A suicidal Napoleon man’s life was spared last Wednesday night, thanks in large part to the good work of a crisis negotiator brought in by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Steve Rand said that on Wednesday, May 20, at 8:27 p.m., deputies responded to the 6000 block of Stetler Drive in Napoleon Township, for a suicidal subject.When deputies arrived, the 26-year-old man was inside a camper, in the driveway of the residence, threatening to shoot himself. The man discharged the firearm while his 26-year-old girlfriend was still in the camper.
A crisis negotiator was able to get her out of the camper.
The man refused to come out and discharged the firearm again, striking himself in the leg. The crisis negotiator was able to convince the man to exit the camper. Deputies and emergency medical service personnel rendered aid to his gunshot wound. The subject’s injuries were non-life threatening and he was transported to Henry Ford Allegiance Health for medical and mental health treatment.
Jackson County deputies were assisted on scene by the Napoleon Township police and fire departments, the Michigan State Police, the Columbia Township Police Department, and the Jackson Community Ambulance.
