Sara Bieda and Andrew Terryah, soon-to-be Brooklyn residents, were the first customers Saturday at Callaghan’s Coffee Café on Main Street in Brooklyn, just south of the light downtown.

“We wanted to be the first customers,” Bieda said.

“Brooklyn needs an actual coffee house,” Terryah added.

Owners Chad and Desiree Fires have been renovating the old Callaghan’s bar the past several months to turn it into their coffee café.

“It was exciting and a little stressful,” said Desiree of Saturday’s soft opening. “We put in a lot of long hours, but it was definitely worth the hard work.”

Terryah opted for breakfast to go with his coffee, while Bieda just wanted a nice cup of coffee. Terryah said his breakfast burrito “was outstanding”.

Kayle Fowler brews up a specialty coffee drink for a customer during Callaghan’s Coffee Café opening day Saturday.

“I think Chad and Desiree have a vision,” he said. “It’s not just a coffee shop. It’s going to be a lot bigger than that. I think it will be successful.”

Terryah and Bieda also had Mounds (yes, like the candy bar) flavored coffee that they highly recommend. A variety of specialty coffee drinks, teas, smoothies, ice drinks, breakfast foods, lunch foods, desserts (cheesecake and gourmet brownies), pastries and snacks highlight Callaghan’s menu.

Ironically, the same week the Fires purchased the Callaghan’s building, Sara and Andrew bought the building that used to be the Brooklyn Barber Shop and will eventually have a business of their own called “Sweet Caroline’s”.

Callaghan’s Coffee Café is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
